Individual training in accordance with DNA

In this article, we will show you how your decision-making in the training process is influenced by genetics and how to adapt the training to it really individually. My name is Pavol Pavlovič, I am the founder of the DNA4FIT brand. After many years of experience in the field of the training process, I can say with certainty that only individual training, even in collective sports, is the right way to effectively use the potential of every athlete.

Nowadays, genetic analyzes are an integral part of choosing a suitable sport for children from an early age, preparing individual training plans, setting and achieving sports and life goals.

Individual training based on genetic facts

In genetic analysis SYSTEM SPORTS for individuals and SYSTEM FAMILY SPORTS for families, we focus on sports genes in detail, the knowledge of which means completely new knowledge about athletes of different ages and performance. We recommend applying this knowledge about an athlete's innate predispositions in every individual training plan. From sports analyses, we focus on muscle structure and muscle volume, fat burning and the proportion of fat-free mass, VO2max, risks of soft tissue injuries, regeneration and muscle fatigue, the warrior gene and heart capacity.

"We have a limit, a ceiling, and we cannot exceed it. But people like Bolt have higher limits due to their genetic makeup,” says expert in genetics, epigenetics and sport, Professor Nir Eynon, from Victoria University.

DNA-based recommendations

When looking at the results of genetic analysis, it is important for me to know whose results I am looking at. In the first place, of course, I have the health aspects of the results and the incorporation of recommendations into the daily routine as preventive measures of a healthy lifestyle and measures of personal health care. If I am looking at the results of an athlete or future athlete, depending on age, gender and sport, it is possible to immediately start constructive communication at the level of athlete, parent, coach. In the case of collective sports, it is possible, and I consider this a prerequisite for success, to create microgroups of athletes with similar requirements for appropriate training time, diet, supplementation, health monitoring, education, regeneration and other useful components of the training process. In the case of individual sports, it is possible to get even more out of the training process by specifying the details.

"The chance to succeed in a particular sport is mainly determined by innate abilities. Based on the athlete's genetic make-up, it is possible to prepare recommendations that relate to training plans, nutritional needs, regeneration or mental preparation and will lead the athlete to appropriate training. The most suitable training for an athlete is individual."

EXAMPLES FROM PRACTICE

  1. We know that many athletes drink like performance stimulant coffee or caffeinated beverages. Athletes with one or two mutated copies of the CYP1A2 gene metabolize caffeine more slowly and, as a result, feel a greater effect when consuming coffee. However, this is not as favorable as it might seem, because after consuming coffee, their blood pressure increases more than people with fast metabolism of caffeine. Scientists have proven in many studies that athletes with a slower metabolism of caffeine are more sensitive to the development of health problems associated with increased blood pressure, they suffer more from insomnia.
  2. We know that physical activity causes in the body oxidative stress through increased formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition to ROS generation, exercise affects the body's complex immune system and can have a cascading effect on the inflammatory response, which can lead to chronic inflammation. Therefore, for athletes with slow regeneration, based on the analysis of a specific group of genes, we insist on changing the training cycle, especially during intensive training. In addition, we will increase antioxidant supplementation.
  3. Muscle fatigue can be one of the main obstacles preventing athletes from reaching their maximum potential. During exercise, contracting muscles produce lactate and hydrogen ions as a result of a process called glycolysis. Small amounts of lactate act as a temporary source of energy. However, the accumulation of lactate during high-intensity exercise leads to a burning sensation in the muscles and restricts muscle contractions, leading to muscle fatigue. If we find that the athlete has slow removal of lactate, we will suggest effective supplementation before, during and after performance.

Not everyone can be a successful athlete or a successful coach.

In my opinion, an athlete as well as a coach is defined by several parameters - genetic predisposition, intelligence, knowledge, experience and talent. In the training process itself, other qualities of the athlete are revealed, which are secondary in importance, and it should not be a problem for a top trainer to develop them and direct them in the right direction at a sensitive age.

Genetic predispositions, intelligence and talent are prerequisites that are innate, but it is possible to develop them to "perfection". Knowledge and continuous education are an integral part of the systematic development of an individual. Experience comes with age. The role of the coach is to use intelligence, knowledge, experience, talent, but also genetic predisposition for the development of the athlete.

Sport for fun and top sport

At a certain age, it is necessary to make fundamental decisions about which sport to choose or, on the contrary, not to choose. Subsequently, it is important to think about what goals to set and to work with an individual training plan as an open system into which many variables enter. You also need to know what level of physical activity is beneficial for the body and what it is already beyond the limits of an individual's organism and how to proceed in such a case. Physical activity in general affects our health, but some sports activities are more suitable for some individuals than for others. For example, genetics has a large influence on an individual's nutritional needs and on various athletic characteristics, such as strength, power, endurance, muscle fiber size and composition, flexibility, neuromuscular coordination, temperament, and more. From DNA analysis, we can also find out facts about metabolism, nutrient requirements, cardiovascular health and more, and thus help with decisions:

  1. what sport is suitable
  2. what performance level is beneficial for the organism
  3. what needs to be done to reach the best level.

There are people among us who are exceptional in what they do, what they have achieved and they inspire others with their way of life. Genetics gave them talent and they were not afraid to use it, develop it and sacrifice something extra for it and thus achieve more than others. They are simply GENETICALLY GENIOUS. We bring you an interview with one of them.

The warrior gene

Despite years of preparation and training, some individuals simply cannot handle it under pressure, while others seem to thrive on pressure and adrenaline. The answer is hidden in the COMT gene. The product of this gene is responsible for breaking down adrenaline. A variant in this gene results in some being "fighters" while others are more "worried" in nature. Fighters have a very active COMT enzyme; therefore, their adrenaline breaks down quickly, resulting in a low baseline adrenaline level. The anxious have very little active production of the COMT enzyme, which leads to a higher basal level of adrenaline. Everyone has an optimal adrenaline level. Worries are probably already at their optimal level, so the automatic increase in adrenaline in a difficult situation will make them lose control. Their hands start to sweat, their muscles shake, their motor movements don't work, their brain is overloaded resulting in unfocused thinking, and they suffer from tunnel vision. Looking at a fighter whose adrenaline levels are normally low, an equally challenging situation will cause adrenaline to rise to optimal levels.

Sprinter or endurance?

Athletes have two different types of muscles, type I and type II. Sprinters tend to have type II, or fast-twitch, or more active muscle fibers in their body, while endurance runners tend to have more type I, or slow-twitch, muscles in their bodies.

When studying neuromuscular diseases, Australian scientists began to pay attention to the gene alpha-actinin (ACTN3), whose product is important for the contraction of muscle cells. They found that the product of this gene is present only in fast-twitch muscle fibers. They identified a mutation that causes the product of this gene to become inactive, which is why people with this mutation do not have ACTN3. In a study involving elite athletes, researchers found that sprinters mostly have two active copies of the ACTN3 gene, while endurance runners have two inactive variants of the gene. This proved the hypothesis that an active ACTN3 gene is required for the presence of muscle explosiveness. In a second study, the researchers showed that fast-twitch muscle fibers in which the ACTN3 gene is inactive use more oxygen than those that have at least one active copy of the gene. A higher need for oxygen slows down the muscles. Muscle fibers with an inactive ACTN3 gene are likely to be weaker and smaller, but they also fatigue much later.

Personalized nutrition - the basis of an optimal diet

Despite the fact that 99 percent of our genetic makeup is exactly the same, we find millions of genetic variations between individuals. For this reason, the nutritional needs of each individual are specific and are the subject of the new field of nutrigenetics - personalized nutrition. An individual approach to nutrition is fundamentally important and absolutely necessary to ensure an optimal diet, just as your personal doctor, who knows you, is essential to ensure your health. Diet is also one of the factors that you can use to influence our body, and at the same time the factor that can be influenced the easiest. A system called the glycemic index was created to evaluate individual foods, with the help of which their effect on increasing the blood sugar level is determined. In the DNA analysis, you will learn about the main components of the diet - macronutrients and the meaning of the analyzed vitamins and minerals - micronutrients. The macro-nutrition plan that we will recommend to you as part of the DNA analysis is not chosen randomly, but is based on your genetic make-up. A diet based on your individual DNA analysis takes into account your personal characteristics and allows you to eat what your body really needs and what is harmful to it, you omit or limit.
